White belt is like a wet clay. A white belt is taught the basics of karate and is expected to showcase them satisfactorily in the grading test. Expectations are not very high because it still is a lower belt.
This will vary greatly by style and school. Most require you to demonstrate the basic moves and perhaps the basic kata.
