A food chain is a linear series of links starting with one specific species that eats no other species in the web, and endling with a specific species that eaten by no other species in the web. That's different from a food web.

One example of a food chain is the animals living in, around, and near a freshwater lake. Osprey (Fish eagles) feed on Northern pike (fish), which in turn feed on Perch (fish) which eat Bleak (a type of Carp, which is a fish) that feed on Freshwater Shrimps. The primary producers of this food chain are most likely autotrophic phytoplankton, which use the sun's energy to produce their own food.

More Information:

A food chain is basically a diagram of who eats whom. An example of a food chain is:

  • The sun gives energy to the green plant (this is called the producer) ie: grass,
  • the grass is then eaten by the rabbit (which is known as a primary consumer) and then
  • the rabbit (called the secondary consumer) is then eaten by the fox (called the carnivore).

The Sun will be the start of any food chain then will come the producer then the primary consumer, then the secondary consumer, then will come the carnivore at the top of the food chain

If there are six in the food chain it will go like this:

  1. the Sun will start the food chain,
  2. the producer will come next,
  3. then will come the primary consumer,
  4. next will come the secondary consumer,
  5. after that will come the tertiary consumer and
  6. finally the carnivore at the top of the food chain.

A food chain is a diagram, of some sort, that describes how energy is passed from one living thing to the other. Commonly, there are three or four "levels" of a food chain - each level having the capacity of only one living thing per food chain. Level one usually contains a plant or tree (or some other producer); level two usually contains a herbivore or omnivore; level three usually contains a carnivore; level four usually contains humans, or a carnivore.

An example of a food chain: [Sun -> Grass -> Zebra -> Lion ]

The food chain is what animal eats what...like a bird eats grass then snake its bird then owl eats snake. So the owl is the king of the food chain

A food chain or food web is a representation of the predator-prey relationship between organisms in an ecosystem. The base of every food system is made of producers, organisms that can make their own food.

Most species can be considered both preditor (the hunter) and prey (the hunted). A food chain is a list of species organized to where each species on the list is a consumer of the species listed next and is consumed by the species listed previously. Because humans go to great lengths to avoid being eaten, we are usually considered "the top of the food chain". Species at the bottom of most food chains are usually tiny creatures, like algae or plankton.
