It can be done, but it is not common. Due to the trauma involved with major abdominal surgery on such a large animal, the desexing of a female horse usually involves the removal of the ovaries only, generally through a small incision in each flank. The uterus and fallopian tubes are removed only if they are diseased. The spaying of a horse is expensive, and is only normally undertaken under circumstances such as: * The raising of meat horses - spayed horses put on weight faster, and also a meat horse should not conceive * Mares that become extremely aggressive or cannot be handled during their oestrus cycles, where hormonal treatments have failed or are unsuitable in the long term * Disease of the ovaries, fallopian tubes or uterus * Hormonal imbalances in an old mare * As a precaution in a mare that should definitely never be bred ie because of a genetic condition, or an abnormality of the uterus that will not stop her from conceiving but will stop her from carrying

There are alternatives to spaying a mare, and most techniques are equally effective, and much safer for the horse.

* False pregnancies are more commonly used to stop heat cycles, and are much safer for the mare. A small "pebble" is inserted into the uterus, and can prevent the mare from going into heat for about 6 months (and can then be re-inserted). * There are also medications that prevent or limit the number of heat cycles a mare will go into. Similar medications can also limit the effects of the heat cycle on the mare if the horse has a tendency to be really hot during this time. * If you are more concerned with the mares behavior during her heat cycle, various alternative techniques such as acupuncture, either on a regular basis, or in the form of an ear clip, can decrease how hot/hard to handle/ride the mare can get during her cycle.

Unlike male horses, when a female horse is castrated it is still called a mare or filly, whereas a stallion or colt would become a gelding.
