It was like being on a thin bookshelf, that had been in a sewer for a few weeks. The people in the boats had to live in conditions such as arm-to-arm contact in chains, with another shelf less than an inch from their face. They werent allowed out, expept to eat 2-3 times a week, in which their shelves were not cleaned. The shelves were always filled with feces (poo) and urine (pee), and they had to lay in it all day.

When you were aboard a slave ship the conditions were a lot like this maybe even worse:
Unhygienic conditions, dehydration, dysentery and scurvy led to a high mortality rate, on average 15%[2] and up to a third of captives. Only the most resilient survived the transport. Often the ships transported hundreds of slaves, who were chained tightly to plank beds. For example, the slave ship "Henrietta Marie" carried about 200 slaves on the long Middle Passage. A slave ship needed skilled sailors to man the ship but extra hands in order to control the slaves. Death rates amongst the slaves were one in eight, but among the crews were one in five, largely from malaria, but the captain's had no incentive in keeping surplus crew members alive.
