The combination is pressed together usually under heat, to bond the layers. Then the edges are milled to provide a tongue and groove effect.

The Melamine surface is susceptible to attack from acids especially strong acids like HCL and H2SO4, less so from organic acids. This either leaves a white or light patch, these can not be repaired or removed although they do not affect the properties of the laminate other than appearance.
