HDF is bottom coated with a waterproof layer. Then a printed layer of paper, usually a wood grain pattern, is applied to give the illusion of real wood, along with a melamine impregnated cellulose layer to repel stains and prevent damage. The combination is pressed together usually under heat, to bond the layers. Then the edges are milled to provide a tongue and groove effect.
A laminate is made of layers. That's what the term means.

This either leaves a white or light patch, these can not be repaired or removed although they do not affect the properties of the laminate other than appearance.
