Depending on the era, a number of large weapons - considered to be early day aof artillery have been used which 'fire' projectiles through the air by way using a large counterweight which is heavier that the projectile to propel it through the air. Early cannons also fired stones through the air in much the same wy as cannons used in the American Civil Wars and Scottish Wars of Independance however round stones were used before production methods for cannonball had been invented.
When you fill a pillowcase with stones you get a pillowcase filled with stones. Depending on the logic behind such an activity, some may even perceive it as a weapon.
