Every year is actually 365 and 1/4 days long. So every 4 years they have to add another day so that everything stays in sync. So, every February, they add a an extra day, every 4 years, so that February has 29 days in Leap years and 28 in common years.

Leap year's are years that have an extra calendar day to keep the calendar in sync with astronomical events.

They occur every 4 years

Leap Years are every 4 year, and the easiest way to know if a particular year is a Leap Year (if, say for example, you can't remember when the last Leap Year was) is divide the year by 4. If you get a whole number it's a Leap Year, if you don't then it's not a Leap Year.

For example, 2008 was a Leap Year, and 2008/4 = 502. If you take the three years before 2008, they won't make a whole number when divided by 4, 2007/4 = 501.75, 2006/4 = 501.5 and 2005/4 = 501.25

However there is an exception to this.

Where the year is at the start of a century (i.e the year number ends in 00), the year must be divisible by 400. If it isn't, then that year isn't a Leap Year, even it is 4 years after the last Leap Year.

Again providing an example.

2000 was a Leap Year as 2000/400 = 5

1900 was not a Leap Year as 1900/400 = 4.75 (not a whole number, so not a Leap Year). Thus 1896 was a Leap Year but it was 8 years before the next one in 1904.

2100 will not be a Leap Year as 2100/400 = 5.25

Why is 1900 not a leap year?

In the Gregorian calendar, for a year to be a leap year, the year would have to be not only divisible by 4, but in the cases where the year is divisible by 100, to be divisible by 400, also. Therefore, 2000 was a leap year, but 2100, 2200, 2300 will not be leap years.
