Carl Linnaeus is known as the father of modern taxonomy. Although a system of binomial naming had been in use for some time, it was unorganized. Linnaeus, through documented studies and publications, was able to normalize the naming system that is still in use today.

What scientist proposed a theory about how evolution works?

A number of scientists have worked in the field of evolutionary biology, but the most important contribution was made by Charles Darwin.

Who contributed the most to biology?

We can say that there are two fathers of modern biology for the relevance of their discoveries, and they are Mendel and Darwin. Extraordinarily the theory of Darwin on evolution of the species can be explained with the help of the Mendel's laws of inheritance (and both of them never known the other's results!) and this is the focus around which rotate the most of the modern theories of biology. But we can't mention three other very important scientists which contribution was really determinant for the knowledge of genetics and microbiology; I mean Watson and Crick that discovered the 3D structure of DNA and Pasteur who is the father of modern microbiology and immunology.

Why is Charles Darwin important in biology?

The Theory of Evolution by means of Natural Selection, now called Neo-Darwinism or the Modern Evolutionary Synthesis was first properly supported and made famous by Charles Darwin, and (most importantly) best explained. Darwin came up with the mechanism by which animals and plants and all life changed over time: Natural Selection, and gathered evidence for it. The idea of evolution which seems always synonymous with Darwin is the most important idea in biology. You could immediately argue that cell theory and genetics are mind-bogglingly important, but even they are subsets of evolutionary science, evolutionary explanation. Darwin's evolution and Natural Selection is the greatest explainer in all of biology. That is why Darwin is important.
