Like the SAT and ACT, the TOEFL has no passing or failing grade. However, some universities require non-native speakers of English to earn a minimum TOEFL score in order to be admitted. Sometimes a university will require a minimum score, but a department within the university will require an even higher score.

Examples:

Minimum Score for

iBT

PBT

Brown University, Department of Physics

University of California, Los Angeles, graduate division

87

560

University of Missouri

580

In TOEFL writing, paraphrasing is crucial. In fact, you'll lose a lot of points for plagiarism if you don't paraphrase your sources in Integrated Writing and instead utilise the identical terminology from the lecture or excerpt. It's also not good for your score if you repeat the question in Independent Writing word for word.

So, to improve your paraphrasing skills, remember to practise excellent paraphrase tactics and look for paraphrasing practice exercises.

Do thorough prewriting for TOEFL Independent Writing.

Because of a lack of prewriting, many TOEFL Independent Writing replies turn out to be unorganised. There are two processes to prewriting: brainstorming and outlining. Simply jot down whatever ideas come to you throughout the brainstorming period. Then you can start working on your outline. This is where you select the ideas for your essay and arrange them in the correct order. Your outline should be organised in a way that follows the TOEFL Independent Essay framework, including an introduction, body, and conclusion.

Focus on the lecture for TOEFL Integrated Writing.

Remember that the major goal of TOEFL Integrated Writing is to "summarise the points made in the lecture." Yes, you'll also explain how these elements relate to the passage's themes. However, the instructor will reiterate the passage's most crucial points. So, if you're going to take notes throughout the reading, keep them simple and brief. Then pay close attention to the points in the reading that the lecturer chooses to discuss. And pay attention to how the instructor responds to these points.

Take thorough notes for the TOEFL Integrated Writing section.

Your notes are your prewriting in TOEFL Integrated Writing. Because your essay is merely a summary of the reading and lecture, everything you write should be based entirely on your notes from the reading and lecture.

The lecture, not the reading, should be the emphasis of your notes. However, concepts from the reading are still important; your notes should compare and contrast the author's and lecturer's points of view. Consider writing the reading's points of view in one column and notes on the speaker's point of view in another. Alternatively, find another way to clearly connect and compare the professor's and writer's points of view in your notes.

Make certain your spellings are comprehensible.

Spelling is one of the most important "deal breakers" for a good TOEFL Writing score. If you misspell essential terms frequently, your TOEFL Writing response can become difficult, if not impossible, to comprehend.

Be wary of terms with similar sounds and spelling, such as these frequently misunderstood verbs. If you misspell one word and it becomes another, you can completely shift the meaning of a statement. Also, don't make educated guesses about the spellings of longer terms. Spelling guesses for advanced vocabulary words can result in some illegible spelling options. If you're having trouble spelling a term, consider substituting a different word or phrase.

Keep your grammar in check.

Sometimes an essay's overall structure is sufficient. Individual sentences, on the other hand, are the source of the problem. Understand the various grammar structures in English. Understand the structure of clauses, phrases, and sentences.

Include a variety of grammar in your TOEFL writing.

A sentence can be constructed in a variety of ways. The TOEFL examiners will be looking for evidence that you understand these various grammar patterns. Be aware of the various grammar constructs that can be used in English, and write sentences that demonstrate your command of the language. (For examples of other types of sentence construction, see my page on sentence variety and the many methods to make a sentence.)
