Christian morality is the belief that the best way to live is in keeping with the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, including loving God and neighbors, living by the 10 Commandments, and living by the Golden Rule to "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Arguably, the most important law held by modern Christians is The Golden Rule which is "So in everything, do to others that you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets" Matthew 7:12. This rule is an ancient one that was adopted from the philosophies of India, Greece, Judea, and China.

There are many, many laws in the Old Testament (Tanakh) that are not observed by followers of Christianity and in addition many followers do not interpret the Ten Commandments the same context the Jews did, or cut a great portion of them out. There is a great difference in morals from modern Christians as Early Christians as literal interpretations transformed into modern-day metaphorical, and therefore the answer in regards to things other than The Golden Rule is largely subjective.

The most succinct answer for this is the golden rule: Matthew 7:12 "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets."

Jesus also said "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." (John 13:35). He eleaborates on it in the Gospel of Luke.

Luke 6

30Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. 31And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. 32For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. 33And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. 34And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. 36Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

All Christian ethics and morals boil down to two things- Love God, and love others.

In the Book of Galatians it has the fruits of the Spirit which are good moral principles: But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control. There is no law against such things as these. (Galatians 5:22-23)

The morality of a true Christian would necessarily come from the Bible. It declares what is right and what is wrong for man in God's sight. The Scriptures indicate that when a person has been forgiven their sins, by trusting in Christ as the one who paid for those sins by dying on the Cross, that they have a new life. This new life, as a Christian, is to be different from the common thinking of the sinful world, putting aside the former ways of life. As Christ was risen from the grave, the christian is dead to the old ways, and risen to newness of life.

As it states in 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." Also in Ephesians 4:22-24, a Christian is instructed, "Put off concerning the former conversation [lifestyle] the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." Then examples are given, such as: "Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another." v.25; and: "Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth." v.28.

Much instruction is given in the Scriptures of the moral life that the Christian is to follow in God's strength, so a new Christian is told in 1 Peter 2:1-3: "Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings. As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious." So studying God's Word will direct a Christian as to that which is pleasing to God, and that which is not, enabling them to make wise decisions and actions.

Views on Christian ethics and morality vary from denomination and even within denominations. One view is put by Norman L. Geisler (Christian Ethics:Options and Issues), who says that Christian ethics are distinguished by being based on God's will and being absolute. He says that Christian ethics is prescriptive and deontological. This last means that a Christian rule must be followed even if the outcome will be evil, rather than acting so as to achieve the greatest good. He argues strongly for capital punishment.

Geisler says that active euthanasia is morally wrong from a Christian perspective, but passive euthanasia may be morally acceptable, as long as it is a natural and irreversible death, not an unnatural or reversible one. He considers voluntary sterilisation acceptable. While generally opposing abortion, he says that informed consent is a necessary foundation for abortion.

Geisler concedes that some of the blame for environmental degradation may lie with 'Christendom', but can not accept that it ever lies with Christianity, saying this arises because some Christians do not follow the Christian way. A recent example of poor Christian ethics is arguably at odds with Geisler's view. A evangelical preacher travelled to Antarctica, where glabal warming is making some land more capable of supporting plant life. In spite of warnings not to take any seeds, since the introduction of exotic species could bring about environmental disaster, he took barley seeds, one for each soul to be saved, and began spreading them on the ground. The ship's company had to take time out to collect every seed they could find, and hope that no long term damage would come about.

Many Christians believe that the answer to every moral issue is to be found in The Bible, either in the Ten Commandments or in the Golden Rule taught by Jesus. But most ethical issues we face involve conflicting situations in which we face alternatives in which we must choose the lesser of two wrongs, and the Bible provides no guidance for this. Augustine taught that Christians must never tell a lie, even if that lie would save a life or prevent unnecessary suffering. Few Christians today would follow that advice. Luke's advice, to give to everyone who asks and never to ask for it to be returned, is entirely impractical and almost never followed and is therefore not really a Christian ethic.
