It is called the "common" era by some people because it is commonly shared among all cultures of the world as the predominant year-numbering system, despite its Western/Eurocentric bias.
For example, it is the year 1432 in the Islamic era, 5771 in the Hebrew era, 2555 in the Buddhist era, and 2011 in the Christian era. But the Christian era is the one that has come to be used all around the world, even in Islamic, Buddhist and Jewish circles, for civil convenience purposes. Therefore, in addition to being the Christian era, it is considered the "Common" era.

∙ 13y agoCommon Era merely replaces AD. Our present year is 2010 common era or 2010 CE. BCE is before common era and replaces BC. Julius Caesar was killed in 44 BCE.
