Polygamy is when one partner of one sex is married to more than one partner of the other sex. There are two forms of polygamy: polyandry - which is when one woman is married to multiple men - and polygyny - which is when one man is married to multiple women.

Most people imply polygyny when they say polygamy since polygyny is much more common at present and historically than polyandry.
