A therapeutic index refers to eiffernce between the minimum level a medication must reach within the body for it to be effective and the maximum level a drug will reach before a medication causes side effects. For most medications there is a large range between these two values. A narrow therapeutic medication has a must smaller index. Some medications for seizurers or thyroid disease (for example other medications fall into the group too) have a small difference between what dose it required to achieve a proper response and too much that might cause a side effect. All of these medications are dose based on specific patient characteristics and many require frequent blood work or other clinical monitoring. Discuss your questions/ concerns with your pharmacist or other heathcare provider.

Is therapeutic index a useful measure of safety?

It is for certain drugs such as Digoxin as they have such a narrow therapeutic index. For drugs with a wide range of therapeutic index, the best measure of safety is the maximum daily dose, its effect on the patient and what other drugs it interacts with. Ask your pharmacist for specific safety questions on your specific drugs.

Why do penicillin have a better therapeutic index than other antimicrobial?

Yes these are the antibiotics which have the highest therapeutic index.. That too penicillin is exceptionally high... The only side effect which is considered significant from these two groups of antibiotics is Hypersensitivity reaction or allergis reaction which can be lethal also in some of them.. The reason is, both of these belong to a group of beta lactum antibiotics and they both have a protein structure and they are easily metabolised in the body.. If they ast on bacteria than they are antibiotics otherwise they are mere protein food, just like giving parentral nutrition... Hence they have a huge therapeutic index..

What is narrow band FM and how a narrow band FM generate?

If the modulation index of FM is kept under 1, then the FM produced is regarded as narrow band FM. Lower the modulation index, lower the no. of significant sidebands are produced (with reference to bessel function). So lower the no. of significant sideband, lowerer will be the bandwidth of the resulting FM prduced. Sometimes, Narrow Band FM is regarded as, when the significant energy in FM occupies the same bandwidth as ordinary AM with the same modulating signal.
