Aluminium forms the oxide Al2O3, often called alumina or corundum.

It is a hard substance. Chemically it is classed as amphoteric because it reacts with acids and bases. It forms on the surface of aluminium very rapidly and passivates the surface. Aluminium is actually a reactive metal but because ot the invisible, thin oxide layer appears quite inert; without the layer aluminium would react with water to generate hydrogen.

Does ammonia react with aluminum oxide?

Yes ammonia can react with aluminum oxide. Aluminum oxide is ampoteric, that is, it shows both acidic and basic characters. Ammonia is basic in nature, so there will be a reaction between acidic and basic chemicals.

What is name of the compound Al2O3?

Al is the symbol for Aluminum and O is the symbol for oxygen. When oxygen is paired in a compound, it is changed to oxide. The name then is aluminum oxide.

Why is gold found as gold metal but aluminium is found as aluminium oxide?

Gold is a very unreactive element, so it occurs as gold metal in nature. However, aluminum is more reactive, and so it occurs in aluminum ore (aluminum oxide) in nature, not as aluminum metal.
