I am only an eighth grader, but read my answer.
So, when the visible light passes through the prim and refracts on it's edges, the beam of light splits into a spectrum and it looks like a rainbow, only because white light is acctually all of the colors of light put together.
Hope i helped :)
A "Spectrum" is produced. ~ aaarg
Different colors are observed when sunlight passes through a prism. Prisms separate the different colors into a rainbow for the viewer.
When sun light falls on a prism then it gets split into its constituent colours. This phenomenon is known as DISPERSION

A period. It would look like this: Newton discovered that sunlight had many colors when it passed through a prism. You would use a period because it is a statement. You use periods for statements or imperative sentences (commands).

The squall may have passed you but the rain is still falling elsewhere. If sunlight passes through the rain, you will see a rainbow as the water droplets work as a prism and split the sunlight into it's component colours.
Color is a direct function of light by passing sunlight through a prism and observing the bands of spectrum of colors was discovered by Isaac Newton. It was discovered in the 1660's.

Isaac Newton discovered that white light is made up of seven different colors when he passed sunlight through a glass prism.
