The church was allowed control by the entire society. It was a time of hardship, no government, and poverty. The Catholic Church filled a void after the loss of Roman government and it provided rules and morals for the society. At first knights were not the noble men we think they were, but killed, raped, and stole from people at will. The Catholic Church set rules for them to follow and if they didn’t they would be excommunicated. This meant they wouldn’t go to heaven and something the mid evil man or woman feared. They were taught by the church that man and woman were born in sin and what they did in life determined if they went to heaven. In the Middle Ages the Church was also the middle man between God and man. Without a priest man couldn’t communicate with God.

I am not sure the Church was "hard" during the Middle Ages. The Church spent a lot of energy providing for the sick and poor, giving people refuge, representing the needs of the poor to the kings, and protecting people.
