This particular hot plate is a common piece of laboratory equipment used for mixing solutions in the laboratory. It has a slow spinning magnetic field generated in the
hot plate and this spins a plastic coated magnet placed inside the solution being heated. Turn the hot plate on, place the beaker with the solution on the hot plate.
Place the magnet in the solution, adjust the temperature and speed of the magnet with dials on the front of the hot plate. This hot plate does not get hot enough usually for cooking.
