Orographic rainfall is when a parcel of air containing water vapor gets to a mountain, it is then forced upwards (the mountain blocking its way).

As the parcel of air is forced upwards, it expands (adiabatic expansion) and also cools. As it cools, it becomes saturated because the amount of water it can hold decreases, so the water vapor begins to condense and finally falls as rain.

Orography is basically the science of mountains. Accordingly, orographic lifting takes place when an air parcel (smaller) or air mass (larger) that contains sufficient water vapor is moved up the windward (upwind) side of a mountain. As the air parcel/mass is lifted, it cools at a relatively constant rate. As the moist air cools, it condenses if lifted far enough (it much reach what's called the dew point temperature), and clouds will form. If the lifting continues, and the tops of the cloud(s) rise high enough - that is, the cloud is thick enough - precipitation size droplets (about 2mm or more) can form.

Rainfall in mountain areas is called: Orographic rainfall.

What is oragraphic rainfall?

The correct spelling is orographic rainfall instead of orographic rainfall. When moist air is lifted over a mountain by the wind, the result is orographic rainfall.

What kind of rainfall is affected by mountain ranges?

Orographic

What is the basic difference between convection and orographic kinds of rain fall?

Orographic rainfall occur at d windward side of mountain. It occur by the rising air motion of moist air around the mountain resulting into adiabatic cooling and condensation. While convective rain occur from the nimbostratus part of cloud. "Engr ajimurt001"

What types of rainfall are there?

there are 3 types of rainfall which are still exsisting: relief rainfall convectional rainfall Frontal rainfall

Where does relief rainfall occur?

Relief(or Orographic) rainfall occurs in areas with mountains and/or complex terrains. Warm air is pushed up and over the terrain and cools at the higher altitude, producing rain on the upwind slope and dry conditions on the downwind slope.

What are three ways of precipitation?

orographic, cyclonic/frontal, convectional rainfall

How do the northern mountains cause rainfall in India?

Because India asked for rain.

What is another name for the orographic effect?

The orographic effect occurs when winf from over the ocean passes over a mountain and the lack of rain creates a desert on the other side.

Where do you find orographic rain?

Orographic precipitation is well known on oceanic islands, such as the Hawaiian Islands or New Zealand, where much of the rainfall received on an island is on the windward side, and the leeward side tends to be quite dry, almost desert-like, by comparison.

Why do the low islands of the Caribbean have limited water resources?

They attract no orographic effect (mountains to raise rain clouds) and any rainfall quickly sinks into limestone.
