A polling place is a location where people go to cast their votes during an election.

Polling places are usually buildings owned by either the public or by a charitable organisation that have been temporarily converted into a place where people can vote. Polling places are fitted with temporary voting booths and ballot boxes on the morning of election day; they are usually only open for as long as voting is allowed. Throughout election day they will be staffed by officials from the agency responsible for running the election; in many countries they will also have independent inspectors checking the work of these officials.

In most countries it is illegal to conduct political activity within the polling station or a certain radius outside it. It is usually forbidden for election adverts to be displayed in or around the polling station, and political party members or candidates may be banned from indicating their allegiance (e.g., in the UK, political party officials usually wear coloured rosettes on election day, but these may not be worn inside the polling place). However, it is usually permitted for political parties to send someone to inspect the ballot casting process on behalf of their candidates.

Any one election will usually have several polling places serving it. Even a small municipal council election may involve over 100 polling places; national elections usually involve tens of thousands of polling stations, serving anywhere from a few dozen people to several thousand. Polling places must be distributed to ensure that everyone is within reasonable travelling distance of a ballot box; for this reason, some countries use portable polling stations to reach remote rural areas. In the 2012 presidential election, the smallest polling place serviced an electorate of just ten people in a small rural village.

Polling places today are typically found in schools, libraries, sport centres, community centres, town halls and local government offices. In some countries it is also common for churches to be used, especially in townships and rural areas or in countries where elections are held on weekdays.

It is worth noting that there is some evidence to suggest that polling places can inadvertently effect voter behaviour. Evidence from the UK has shown that voters in churches are more likely to vote for the morally traditional and law-and-order Conservative Party, whilst voters in schools are more likely to support the Labour Party, which is traditionally associated in the public mind with high levels of investment in public services like education.
