Any anointing of a sick person should be acompanied by fervant prayer, that the Lords will may be done, whether it is unto life or unto death.
"Through this holy Anointing, may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up."
This sacrament is to bring spiritual and physical strength during an illness or sometimes times of near death. It is not only body healing but also the forgiving of sins. Only priests and bishops may perform this sacrament on a living person.
"Is any among you sick? Let him call for the presbyters of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven" (James 5:14-15). This sacrament is now called the Anointing of the Sick and a person does not have to be dying to receive it. It is no longer called the "Last Rites" and "Extreme Unction," Any one physically or mentally ill, aged and infirm, or about to receive surgery can receive this sacrament of healing. The liturgical actions in the Anointing of the Sick include the following principal elements:
• Scripture is read.
• The priests of the Church in silence lay hands on the sick.
• They pray over them in the faith of the Church
• They anoint them with oil blessed by the bishop. The effects of the Anointing of the sick are:
- Uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church
- The strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness
The actual anointing of the sick person is done on the forehead with the prayer "Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit", and on the hands with the prayer "May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up". To each prayer, the sick person, if able, responds: "Amen."
Primarily you are praying that we cooperate with God's Will, and that He give us the strength to do so. We are praying for healing, mostly of our wills, which are usually out of alignment with God's Will, and then, secondarily, for physical healing, IF it should be God's Will and for salvation.
