Lithography is the process of printing a lithograph on a hard surface.
Relief printing is printing from a block (usually wood) where the image to be printed is raised and the parts that are to be blank are removed or cut away. An example would be an ink pad and stamp. Gravure printing is an expensive and high quality printing that uses direct contact between etched copper plate printing rollers and the paper. It is most often reserved for printing wall coverings and the like.
why is screen printing important
It is an indirect printing method, hence the term offset. The image is first transferred from the metal plate to a rubber blanket, and then from there to the printing surface. It is one of the better printing methods and fairly cost effective.Offset printing was discovered by accident. They were using a rotary lithographic press and forgot to load it. When the operator loaded it next, he realized the resulting image was clearer when printed from the roller side. For smaller jobs, digital offset may be more cost effective, since you don't have the preparation costs, but it is a more expensive method for larger number of copies than standard offset printing. Rotogravure or photogravure gives slightly better quality than offset, but those are not cost effective until you get into hundreds of thousands of copies.
Consistent high image quality.Offset printing produces sharp and clean images and type more easily than letterpress printing because the rubber blanket conforms to the texture of the printing surface.Quick and easy production of printing plates.Longer printing plate life than on direct litho presses because there is no direct contact between the plate and the printing surface.Properly developed plates running in conjunction with optimized inks and fountain solution may exceed run lengths of a million impressions.Cost. Offset printing is the cheapest method to produce high quality printing in commercial printing quantities.Disadvantages of offset printing compared to other printing methods include:Slightly inferior image quality compared to rotogravure or photogravure printing.Propensity for anodized aluminum printing plates to become sensitive (due to chemical oxidation) and print in non-image/background areas when developed plates are not cared for properly.Time and cost associated with producing plates and printing press setup. This makes smaller quantity printing jobs impractical. As a result, smaller printing jobs are now moving to digital offset machines.
A map that can be made with a raised surface is a called a raised relief map. They are 3 dimensional.
Margaret Preston used Relief Printmaking in her works. Relief Printmaking is a printing from a raised surface. A simple example of relief printing is a rubber stamp pressed into a stamp pad and then pressed onto a paper.
"Offset printing is a commonly used printing technique where the inked image is transferred (or "offset") from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface."

Offset printing or web offset printing is a commonly used printing technique in which the inked image is transferred, offset. This is done from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface.

Relief printing products include woodcuts, linocuts, etchings, and letterpress prints. These techniques involve carving away parts of a surface, rolling ink onto the remaining raised areas, and then transferring the image onto paper by applying pressure.
