Scientists have done some studies on religion that show that while religion may have a positive mental/emotional effect in the sense of well-being and self-esteem along with altruism, excessive religiosity can lead to problems.

Of those problems are schizophrenia, psychosis, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The disorder of schizophrenia may arise from the action of "hearing" a deity's voice and having "actual" conversations with it. Psychosis mainly involves hallucinations; for example, if you saw Jesus or another religious figurehead walking towards you . OCD can occur from that sense that you must be perfect in your deity's eyes in order to be granted access into heaven, and you thus obsess yourself with trying to be that perfect, sinless person. This can be tied almost directly to schizophrenia, because you would have to know what this god wants you to do in order to be trying to do it, mainly by having it tell you (of course, this is the case for only some).

All in all, religion can have positive or negative effects on your mental/emotional health. And to directly answer the question aside from all the rambling, "spiritual psychology" is the study of the effect of religion/mythology/spirituality on the brain.
