Coal is at the most carbon. Now 2 molecules of oxygen from the air joins with a molecule of carbon and forms CO2 - the carbon dioxide that is so bad for the environment. This is the basic reaction in burning to release energy - and happens also as we breath. Beside carbon, the coal also holds other gases, usually methane and propane that will also burn and form gases that is very bad for the environment. Most forget however, that coal will also produce soot - particles that spins into the air. When the density of soot gets high, people will get problems with breathing. So - burning cool is bad for the environment and will in cities cause people problems with breathing.

Coal fired equipment also releases:

  • inhalable particulates
  • radioactive material (uranium from the coal)
  • nitrogen oxides (acid rain precursor)
  • sulfur dioxide (acid rain precursor and phytotoxin)
  • metals
  • silicates
