Relief rainfall occurs when moist air is forced to rise over a physical barrier such as a mountain or tall buildings. As the warm, moist air rises over the mountain, it cools and the water vapour condenses, forming rain. Ta-daa!! Lol. On the side of the barrier with the rising air, rainfall occurs, but little or no rainfall occurs on the other side. This area of little or no rainfall is called the rainshadow area.

Relief in general deals with the height of the land.
