A rolling stone gathers no moss. A person who is a rolling stone moves from one thing to another, one woman to another. This is a very good metaphor for Rock & Roll.

Muddy Waters used the saying "rolling stone" in a song. In England in the 60's there was a radio program that played a lot of old time blues and early Rock Music. People like Brian Jones listened, and they knew more about this American music than we did! (I've heard Elvis Costello mention this as an influence as well.) The magazine name, the band name, and Bob Dylan's song Like a Rolling Stone all have the same source - Muddy Water's lyric.

Rolling Stone magazine is named after The Rolling Stones, an iconic British rock band formed in 1962. The name was selected by the magazine's co-founder Jann Wenner, who wanted to capture the youthful and rebellious spirit of the band and the era they represented.
