The Shortland Street curse is the name given to the strange coincidences between events on the New Zealand soap Opera Shortland Street and real life events. As Shortland Street storylines are written four months before the episode actually screens, thing can happen in that time resulting in a coincidence.
Some examples include the 1992 nurses strike, students marrying for bigger loans, neo-Nazis lurking in the suburbs, Maia and Jay's civil union (complete with Serenity Church protesters), and the 2009 stories about cyber bullying.
There was also an incident in 2003 when the hospital's back-up generators failed during a power cut. Less than a fortnight after the episode aired, the back-up generator at Starship Childrens' Hospital failed during a power cut.
