A bit, or binary digit, which can either be a zero or a one (or a "true" or "false" - the idea is that there are two different states). However, the smallest piece of data that can be directly accessed as a unit, on a modern computer, is a byte - usually a group of 8 bits.

The smallest unit of data is called a "bit". It is an electrical that that has two states that are interpreted as either a zero or a one value. When you have two bits, each bit can represent either a 0 or a 1 and resulting in 4 possible values. Both can be zero, both can be one and one of them can be zero with the other being a one, or vice versa (00 11 01 10). Two bits therefore can represent 4 different values which we refer to as 0, 3, 1, 2 (following the order of the bits shown earlier). With 3 bits you can have 8 different values allowing the computer to store/handle the numbers 0 through 7 as 000 001 010 011 100 101 110 111.

The next basic unit of computer data is called a byte. It is consists of 8 bits and can maintain 256 different values, or the numbers 0 to 255 (000001 through 11111111).

The next basic unit is called called a word. Depending on the computer, it can be either 16 bits (2 bytes), 32 bits (4 bytes), or 64 bits (8 bytes). Some computers refer to some of these as half words, full words, longwords, integers.
