People do enjoy living near a river, if it is available to them. But, there are many yes and no things associated with living near it. Rivers are usually an excellent source of food. Depending upon where the river is located, the foods available may include several varieties of food fish, crawfish (freshwater) or shrimp (saltwater), turtles, a variety of birds, and constantly beautiful and interesting surroundings. And let's not overlook the great watersports available on the river. Civilizations tend to be located near waterways--oceans, rivers, streams, lakes, etc. The people generally adapt to the demands of living near these waterways. The seasons may bring flooding as well as draught, and homes must be placed in such a way as to survive those floods. I live in central Alabama, not very far from the Alabama River. I have seen the river flow far up onto the plowed cotton fields during a very rainy spring. The river overflowed its banks farther than it had for the past 30 or 40 years, and cattle were being held to the sides of small boats in an effort to get them to high land. There were little v-shaped ripples in the water where the wild rabbits were searching for dry land. Here and there the water was lapping near the road that had been built piled high for just such an emergency. The only homes I saw had wisely been built on stilts, even though there had not been such a flood as this one for a long time. By all means, people should live near a river, if they are prepared for those times when the river rises far above and beyond its banks. They should also be prepared for the wildlife that also inhabits the river regions. This will include snakes, beavers, rats, mice, birds of all sorts, bobcats, deer, crayfish, turtles, lizards, etc., in our part of the country. It is far less important to live near a waterway today than it was 50 or more years ago. Today's society goes to the grocery store, unlike older generations who went fishing or hunting for their food. But, if you choose to live near the water, don't forget to build on stilts! The rain may be steady or predictable today, but who knows what tomorrow may bring?

So that your house doesn't flood, for starters. I think that is pretty self-explanatory. Also if you have kids, you might not be watching and they could run in a never come out.
