An example would be a large credit card company would have a computer that would hold every bit of data that company needed including customers and their info. So in short a computer with large amounts of data, and in most cases, backups of that data too.

∙ 15y agoThe Main Frame is the physical structure of the electronic machinery involved, which would correspond to say, a radio rack or the chassis of a car. the term Main Frame originally applied to Railroad signal and switch interlocking devices which do use a form of fail-safe interlocking, and one might say mechanical logic. Main Frame is still appllied to interlocking machines, always called by those terms-interlocking machines, which control the switches and signals and interlock to avoid or prevent hazardous combinations which are (locked out). Interlocking devices are also, for obvious reasons used on movable bridges.
