To host a Tekkit server just download the server files from the official website. It will be listed in a green box on the right side of the page.

To run it extract the files from the .zip into a folder and run launch.bat. The server will encounter a number of errors as it generates the necessary files.

The server operates and is operated like a regular Bukkit server as it uses Bukkit.

To be able to join the server the "server-IP" in "server.properties" needs to be changed to your own (added after the hyphen leaving "server-IP" there.

If you wish to increase the allocated RAM for the server open launch.bat with a text editor and edit numbers following "-Xmx" using the actual values followed by "M" for megabytes.

e.g. 512MB is -Xmx512M

1024MB is -XmX1024M

Alternately the gigabyte values can be given by replacing the "M" with a "G".

e.g. 1G is -Xmx1G

They can do lots of different things. Some simply edit the command permissions given out to players, some add huge features that change the game. If you are planning to host one, remember that the features I am talking about are only available through plugins. A bukkit server without plugins is a vanilla server.
