First, you just have to learn how to write. Comfortably. Every day. Journal. Diary. Without concern for publication or accolades of any kind. You just write. Then write some more. Novelists talk about writing "a page a day"--at the end of one year you have a 365 page novel! (But it's not that easy). It's a lonely business. You can only do it by yourself. No one can "teach" you how to write. That's impossible. The mechanics of writing?--well, there are plenty of books out there to help you find what you need to learn. Take a writing class--anywhere one is offered. That may or may not help but it's a start! That's about it. But--one last word: you either write or you don't write. Don't deceive yourself about it.

Planning is the most important to get the piece written but the other stages are also needed to produce a piece that is interesting and intelligible.

Planning should include brainstorming, selection and organizing.

Drafting should include the actual writing of the piece in grammatically correct form. Special care should be given to telling them what you will say, saying it and summarizing what you said.

Revising is checking your piece for errors of grammar, spelling and fact.
