ATP is Adenosine Triphosphate - which is basically chemical energy stored in a form all cells can use directly. It is created through respiration. The chemical equations are:

  1. C6H12O6 + 6 O2 = 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + energy
  2. C10H15N5O10P2 [aka ADP] + PO3H + energy = C10H16N5O13P3 [aka ATP]

Glucose + Oxygen + ADP + Phosphate = Carbon Dioxide + Water + ATP

If you haven't figured it out already; ADP is Adenosine Diphosphate.

ATP is adenosine triphosphate. While it also serves as a building block for DNA, it is a high energy compound that is generated during metabolism. Food stuffs are broken down into sugars and fats and these are broken down through glycolysis , the Krebs Cycle, and the electron transport chain to generate ATP.

Additionally, guanosine triphosphate (GTP) can serve as a high energy molecule to drive many other important biochemical processes.
