Answer: Not sure if this is really an answer, but I read something about this in Rome Sweet Home, a book by Scott and Kimberly Hahn. Answer: The Roman Catholic church believes that sex exists purely to produce children, so contraception is therefore a sin. The Anglican churches believe that lovemaking within marriage is a way of uniting a man and woman in physical union, so contraception is acceptable within marriage.
The Church's official stance is that the use of contraception is sinful. When a couple is married, the Church encourages the calendar method of family planning.
The pope recently issued a statement regarding condoms that was highly misunderstood. He said essentially that if condoms prevent HIV, then they are the lesser of two evils, but this in no way is the Church condoning the use of condoms or any other contraception.
