With passive security threats the attacker only reads the packages, but does not modify them (for example sniffing) Goal: obtain info that's being transmitted. with an active attack the attacker attempts to alter system resources or effect their operations. Involves modification of data streams / creation of a false stream.

Dear An ATTACK can take place on any of the communications link. For an active attack, the attacker needs to gain physical control of a portion of the link and be able to insert and capture transmissions ( medium could be telephone twisted pair, coaxial cable, or optical fiber). For a passive attack, the attacker merely needs to be able to observe transmissions (may be inductive taps). I hope i have answered the question :) Sehreen Ahmad Bahria University Karachi Pakistan Active attack: is an attack which the attacked entity gets aware of when attacked. That is the interruption from the attacker is of such kind that he gets aware of the attack, hence called active attack. For example trying to steal some info Passive Attack: when the attacked entity is unaware of the attack, hence called PASSIVE e.g. the attacker is just trying to listen or observer you. ALI, M.Sc. Difference between active and passive optical component?

Fiber optic couplers can be either active or passive devices. The difference between active and passive couplers is that a passive coupler redistributes the optical signal without optical-to-electrical conversion. Active couplers are electronic devices that split or combine the signal electrically and use fiber optic detectors and sources for input and output.

What is the main difference between active trasport and passive transport?

Active transport requires energy (ATP, GTP, etc) to work against the electrochemical gradient. Passive transport works with the electrochemical gradient and does not require energy. (Think diffusion)

Active transport requires ATP and passive transport does not. Active transport goes against the concentration gradient and passive transport goes with the concentration gradient and includes osmosis, diffusion and facilitated diffusion.
