Means "green shoot" or a green leaf or sprout or "new growth" as in coming from the earth in Greek. This was an epithet of the Greek goddess Demeter. The name is also mentioned by Paul in one of his epistles in the New Testament. As an English name, Chloe has been in use since the Protestant Reformation. Demeter was an "earth" goddess (of course, there is no such thing) and the attributes speak of and have a tendency to refer to "strong women" or "independence as in individualism or having a 'stubborn' streak".
