The class system is a hierarchy that has no historical relevance in Germany. It was a French system that was then exported to England by the Normans. Germany was divided into town dwellers and farmers. In order to protect themselves from attack by robber barons, the town dwellers fortified their towns with walls and castles (= Burg) and the term Bürger (literally of the castle) was coined and now generally means citizen.
The class idea was raised later by the German communists, Marx and Engels, who referred to die Arbeieterklasse or das Proletariat (working class) and das Bürgertum (bourgeoisie, middle class).
Terms such as die Ober-Schicht (upper class) and die Mittelklasse (middle class) came about to explain the class system, especially in England.
The word Prolet (derived from Proletariat) has since become a derogatory term to indicate that someone is below a certain level
