A silverback gorilla is not a species of gorilla, but rather a name used to describe the male of the species whose fur appears silver in colour.

since 2011, Gorillas have been divided into two species and four sub-species:

The species 'Eastern Gorilla' (Gorilla Beringer), with the subspecies 'Eastern Lowland Gorilla' (Gorilla Beringer Graveri) and 'Mountain Gorilla' (Gorilla Beringer Beringel).

And the species 'Western Gorilla' (Gorilla Gorilla), with the sub-species 'Western Lowland Gorilla' (Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla) and the 'Cross River Gorilla' (Gorilla Gorilla Diehli).
