There was a Mercury Program in the US in the early 1960's, it was the program that put the first American astronaut into space. They were called "capsules", a one man space ship that was boosted into space by a rocket, they had very little maneuverability. The program was followed by Gemini, which had 2 men in each capsule, then Apollo, where 3 men were in each capsule. Apollo was the program where the first human landed on the moon.

Project Mercury came before the Gemini and Apollo missions ultimately leading to the moon landing. Mercury tested equipent and methods to allow men to orbit and re-enter the earth's atmosphere safely.
