They shed their skins because snakes keep growing in length until they die and the skin does not stretch, so they shed it every once in a while, the new layer of skin underneath is longer. Experts can tell the approximate age of particular snakes by studying the length of the shed skin.

crocodiles skin has a smooth layer on the bottom side of their body (stomach) then on the top side (back) there is a layer of rough and bumpy skin also quite leathery.

If I remember right, alligators have scales called 'scoots'. I think the fall off and regrow once in a while. Google scoots on alligators or something :)

All reptiles shed their skin. Snakes commonly shed in one single piece. Lizards tend to shed in pieces.
