So the original word has to have some aspect of meaning that is like a value or quality, something that can be thought of as existing on a scale, or that can be expressed as one of two polar opposites. Antonyms have opposite meanings, not just meanings that are different. Wall and floor, for example, are not opposite in meaning; neither are sticks and stones.

But the meaning elements of truth and worth lead us to some possible antonyms. I would suggest deception or subterfuge as reasonable antonyms for the word maxim. Others might be lie or even enticement, with the connotation of being enticed into something false, dangerous or otherwise harmful.
