Cat6 cable is the very best. There is a Cat7 in the works but it is not yet readily available and the connector is different. So if you get Cat6 you have the very best available that will work on most everything. Coax DSL cable is superior but mainly used in industrial applications. A Cat6 shielded cable is also quite effective. In a pinch i have run two Cat6 side by side and punched the blue and orange of the first and the green and brown of the second cable on a single jack. This prevents crosstalk thus data loss. The Cat7 cable is a joke. It does not use an rj45 and is heavily shielded as to almost make it impractical.

Put simply, we want a high speed internet connection for all of our computer needs. But which is better, cable or DSL? To make an educated decision, it helps to know the difference between the two. Here is a description of both, so you can decide which type to shop for.

A Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is furnished over a standard telephone line. Unlike older dial-up methods, you can make and receive phone calls while online, because DSL utilizes other frequencies. Cable acts the same way. You can watch cable TV while Surfing the net.

With cable internet service, the bandwidth can be affected by the amount of users in your area. This can be frustrating, because the service may be slow. With DSL, the speed doesn’t change.

Cost can vary depending on your preferences in speed. DSL usually ranges from 768 kbps to 1.5 mbps, and cable ranges from 1.5 mbps to 5.0 mbps. Depending on your needs and use, this is definitely a shopping factor.

Generally speaking, DSL is the lest expensive of the two; however, most cable companies are now offering packages that include Cable Television, internet service and phone service for a single cost. If you utilize all of these services, it might be wise to check out your local cable company’s deals.

Both cable internet and DSL service need a broadband modem. Most providers supply the modem free of charge, or tack on a small monthly rental fee for the use of their modem. You can purchase your own, however, it is recommended that you use the one provided. It is preconfigured and usually hassle-free.

DSL is the quickest way to upgrade, but in the long run you might save more money if you purchase a digital cable package. Whatever you chose, it is an upgrade from dial-up, and that is incentive enough!

Can you use a cable modem and connect it to a DSL ethernet internet connection and an ethernet router at the same time?

No you can not. Cable modems use RF or Radio Frequency to transmit data, usually converting that RF frequency into fiber optic via a node. DSL or Digital Subscriber lines use electricity like a phone line. You could also say Cable modems use coaxial cable and DSL use telephone wire. The two modems are not interchangeable.

Can two competing cable or highspeed internet providers serve or cover the same household?

What is the difference between Cable Modem and DSL Modem?

The cable modem allows the cable provider to plug their service into the back of the modem(coaxial cable) versus the DSL modem allows the phone company to plug their service into the back of the modem(phone line).
