It is best to consult a physcian or just ask a reliable pharmacist on what OTC sleep aids they would recommend. I would suggest not taking medical advice from anyone other then these two possible individuals.

I've tried many of the addictive sleeping pills (Ambien, benzos, etc) and the most effective sleep aid I've ever used is Tryptophan. It's the amino acid that's in turkey and makes you so tired after Thanksgiving dinner :)

It's by prescription most places. Start with 500 mg and if that isn't enough 1g a night would knock out a horse. Also it has no side effects, isn't addictive, and doesn't have a hangover. I highly recommend it instead of trying 'strong' sleeping pills. Also, what works for one person doesn't for another. I know someone who is asleep 20 minutes after a dose of NyQuil. It's individual, but Tryptophan is what works best for me.

I find Ambien to be most effective. But I've also had success with Imovane (Zopiclone),

and even older ones such as Halcion (Triazolam).

I've tried Ambien but 30 mg. of Temazepam puts me to sleep within 15 minutes.

Benadryl. It can be bought over the counter in 25mg caplets. You can take 50mg. at bedtime. If you have never taken benadryl, start with 25 mg. The generic is diphenhydramine. It's less expensive.

diphenhydramine (benadryl) is a descent over the counter sleep aid. I do not recomend Tylenol PM even though they use the same sleep aid because if you are NOT hurting, then why take the Tylenol? Tylenol is VERY difficult for your liver to break down(after 24hrs 99% is STILL in your body). This is due to the livers in-ability to "digest" tylenol. Thus, plain old diphenhydramine is what i use. You can take 2(25mg each, 50mg total) approx 20-30min before retire for bed. PS generic is MUCH less expensive so look in the "allergy section" as the price increases if you buy it from the "sleep aid section"
