how to destroy a VHS tapeby putting the tape in the microwave, it melts the tape. only thrirty five seconds or so. dont worry it won't do anything to your microwave.

I just tried this and what happened was the metal parts inside of the VHS tape arced and those parts of the plastic did melt. Enough of the VHS cartridge fused to where it would no longer play. However, the tape itself looked mostly undamaged - if someone reallly wanted to, they could just transfer the tape to an undamaged cartridge. You'd get a better result by just using a hammer.

So, what I ended up doing was I grabbed a metal coffee can, broke open the cartridge and removed just the tape part, and then poured some furniture paint stripping liquid I already had onto the bare tape. It created some kind of chemical reaction since there was some smoke and sizzle. This probably does it. I left it overnight and have not been out this morning to see the results. If it doesn't fully do it, I'll probably pour a little bit of gas into the coffee can and then throw in a match.

For all of these procedures, have been very cautious to not breathe any vapors produced.

a far better way to quickly and effeciently destroy video tapes is to use a drill. with the tape rewound and placed on it's edge left side up, drill a 3/16 hole thru the tape to the center of the reel. multiple tapes can be done quickly by holding them together with a bar clamp and drilling into them one after another

Don't put the tape in a microwave. I took my data tape out of the case and put the reels into a microwave. It immediately burst into flame.

What I did was take a hammer and chisel and over a board I cut through all the tape in the reels. Used scissors on the stray bits. Theoretically it could be reassembled but it would take an army to sort out the pieces.

My stuck VHS tape is inside VHS player of TV set. Don't see how to open this area--only acces seems to be the door where the VHS is. How can you remove a VHS tape stuck in a DVD and VHS player?

First things first, take the cover off the DVD/VHS player (unplugged), there may be a stainless cover over the vhs tape carriage. Remove this also. The tape should be accessible now. flip the access panel on the vhs tape all the way up, you will have to hold it up as it is spring loaded. You should see the actual tape. Lift the tape up and off any rollers or pins in the tape compartment. once this is done you should be able to manually push the tape out of the loading door. LonJames1 at hotmail dot com. Be careful, though, as the tape will most likely be wrapped around one of the spindle guides that sit beside the rollers. I lost a few tapes forgetting to look for that! wjs1632

How can you fix a VHS tape that is stuck at one spot and will not advance?

To fix a VHS tape that is stuck at one spot and will not advance, just press the socket at the back of the VHS tape with a pen. The small button will be released, allowing for the white reels to be turned in any of the directions. Turn the reels with a pen, fingers or scissors. When the reels turn, you will be able to find out what caused the blockage. The VHS tape can be unwinded this way. It is common for one of the reels' wheel to get stuck on the VCR's mechanisms while the tape is being played.

How can you fix a stuck VHS tape?

This is what I have done in the past: Take a good tape of little value. For instance a promotional tape. Open both the good and bad tape. Discard the actual tape of the VHS cass. that works. Transplant the tape from the defective cass. in the working housing. And presto, one restored VHS cass. (if the actual tape is damaged byond repair this will not solve your problem).

How do you erase a cassette tape?

The easiest way to do this is to record over it, but there will still be residual audio (or video if a VT) from the previous recording. If you wish to erase a confidential recording, I would recommend a Tape Degausser. This emits a rapidly alternating electromagnetic field which demagnetised the tape and thus erases it, in much the same way the degauss feature works to demagnetise components in CRT monitors. However, Tape Degaussers can be very expensive. If it's important it be erased, with no trace and minimal cost - throw it on the fire, but you'll be unable to re use it afterwards.
