The underlying story was about the huge levels of want and deprivation that were around Britain at that time. So many people came to the cities in the expectation of wealth and work that the cities in particular London became over run with the poor, sick and homeless. Yet. industrialist that made their money did so through the appalling treatment of the working class. Children would work 18 hour days for pennies - There was no benefit for those unemployed and many starved to death.
