A smaller river which joins a larger one is called a tributary.

If a river branches and later these branches re-connect - as in flowing around around an island - the smaller branch is sometimes called an arm.

If the branching occurs near the sea, and the arms don't reconnect, then the arms are referred to as a delta.i like chicken
