The enemies of a cactus may be living or non living. Among the environmental stresses are humidity and weather extremes. The cactus tolerates dry heat. But it needs some moisture and some relief from constant, harsh sunlight. There also tends to be a temperature below which the plant can't tolerate the cold. And there definitely are humidity levels above which the plant can't tolerate the moisture in the air or in the ground. In fact, extreme cold and extreme humidity may bring on bacterial, fungal and viral stressors.

Among the environmental stressors are pests. Pests may include birds such as cactus wrens [Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus]; insects such as aphids; and mammals such as people who collect, develop, or overwater.
