We and the animals eat the plants. We make the sugars react with oxygen that we breath in, this releases energy for our muscles and nerves, and results in carbon dioxide that we exhale and water.
The very same carbon dioxide and water finds it's way back to the plants.
Digesting vegetables is like a controlled burning. The energy in stored in phosphor-based molecules that serve as a kind of batteries. ADP gets loaded to ATP, goes to the muscles and releases the energy and becomes ADP again.
