It is frigidly cold, with strong winds but little actual precipitation. The ice that does collect -- not evaporated -- is often whipped into blizzards. It is the coldest place on Earth.

The climate of Antarctica is the coldest on the whole of Earth. Antarctica has the lowest temperature ever recorded: -89.2 °C (-128.6 F) at Vostok Station. It is also extremely dry (technically a desert), averaging 166 mm (6.5 in) of precipitation per year over more than 14 million square miles. Even so, on most of the continent the ice rarely melts and is eventually compressed to become the glacial ice that makes up the ice sheet. Weather fronts rarely penetrate far into the continent. Most of Antarctica has an ice cap climate.

Because Antarctica is a "polar" region, there is no precipitation, it has no lakes or rivers and is in fact the driest continent. Average temperatures in the Antarctic interior get down to -70 degrees Celsius during the winter months and -35 degrees Celsius in the warmer months. The coastal temperatures are much warmer with a range of -15 to -32 Celsius in Winter and -5 to +5 Celsius in Summer. The interior of Antarctica is considered the world's driest desert because the extreme cold freezes water vapour out of the air. Annual snowfall on the polar plateau is equivalent to less than 5 cm of rain. Antarctica has some of the strongest winds on earth, with some winds reaching 320 kph.
Antarctica is a polar desert.

The climate is frigidly cold even during the very long days of summer, due to the albedo of the ice and the shallow solar angle. During the winter, little or no sunlight means even colder temperatures and pack ice along the shores. Very little precipitation falls, and it is almost exclusively snow. But there is also little evaporation into the cold air.

The climate of Antarctica is the coldest on Earth, the lowest temperature ever recorded on Earth being −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F) at Vostok Station. It is also extremely dry (technically a desert). On most parts of the continent the snow rarely melts and is eventually compressed to become the glacial ice that makes up the ice sheet. Most of Antarctica has an ice sheet climate with very cold, generally extremely dry weather throughout the year and no month averaging above 0 °C (32 °F).

Some fringe northwestern coastal areas of the peninsula have a polar climate with a short summer averaging above freezing, and much higher precipitation.

Technically, Antarctica is a polar desert.

East Antarctica is colder than its western counterpart because of its higher elevation. Weather fronts rarely penetrate far into the continent, leaving the center cold and dry. Despite the lack of precipitation over the central portion of the continent, ice there lasts for extended periods. Heavy snowfalls are common on the coastal portion of the continent, where snowfalls of up to 1.22 metres (48 in) in 48 hours have been recorded. At the edge of the continent, strong katabatic winds off the polar plateau often blow at storm force. In the interior, wind speeds are typically moderate.

Another Answer

Antarctica is polar, and is the darkest, driest, windiest, coldest, iciest and highest continent on earth. No animals live on the continent: it's too cold and there is no food chain. The weather is harsh and extreme -- the most extreme on earth.

Antarctica's ice sheet covers 98% of the continent, contains 70% of the earth's fresh water and 90% of the earth's ice. It is permanent and measures more than 15,000 feet in thickness in places.

Snow may occur on the Antarctic Peninsula, and elsewhere on the continent, there is not enough humidity to produce snow. the Katabatic winds are constant and often blow at hurricane speeds.
