A grizzly bear can be either black or dark brown.
brown
Almost a gray or silver color. But you CANNOT go by color; black bears come in those colors too. There are gray, brown, yellow, white, and black black bears. Can't go by size either; there are giant black bears.
You must go by a combination of: Claw length (3 or more inches for grizzlies), hump at the base of the neck on the back, and the lower rear tooth (it'll measure a certain size). The claw length will be the most readily available means of identification. Black bears average about 1 1/2 inch claws.
brown More info: That depends on the type of bear. The brown bear has brown fur, the black bear has black fur (thus, their names), and the polar bear has white fur. There is also the kodiak and grizzly bear, but I don't know what color either of them are.
They can be blonde to almost black, any color in between, but most are a shade of brown.
Grayish to dark brown, any color in between.
It depends on which kind of bear it is.
Bears have white skin
Most black bears are brown or dark brown.

No, a brown colored bear does NOT indicate it is a brown bear. Black bears can be brown, red, or yellow in color, especially in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of CA. Along the coastal mountains of CA, "most" black bears are black in color. Brown bears, today, contain the grizzly bear family. In Alaska the brown's inland are called grizzlys and the brown's along the coast are called brown bears; there both the same bear. The polar bear is a "sea bear."
