The atmosphere of Venus consists mainly of carbon dioxide, and a small amount of nitrogen. The thick cloud cover is composed of sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid droplets. Due to the dense atmosphere, the surface temperature ranges from 750 to 930 degrees Fahrenheit (398 to 498 Celsius). The surface pressure is 90 times that of Earth. That's like being one kilometer (more than half a mile) under the ocean.

Venus's surface is a dry, reddish, rocky desert with many slab-like rocks, and the lava plains are periodically refreshed by volcanism. From spectroscopic analysis and data from Soviet landers, the rocks appear to be silicate forms as are found on Earth, and the reddish tint could be oxidized iron compounds as on Mars.

It is smooth, but is not as smooth as originally thought. There is evidence that there is tectonic activity and that it has similar geological features. Venus is thought to be behind schedule with the tectonic activity which is how they explain the difference in surface. It is just starting out it's tectonic activity.

Venus has a huge amount of volcanoes, and it appears that most of the rock is what we would consider igneous on Earth (it is mostly of a basaltic character).
